Hadley's Jason Lawler Named McGowan Scholar at Stonehill College
Jason Lawler '10 was named Stonehill's 2009-2010 McGowan Scholar and was awarded a tuition scholarship from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund.
McGowan Scholars are chosen on the basis of several factors, including:
aEUR? their high level of academic achievement as a business major
aEUR? a faculty member's recommendation
aEUR? the quality of a personal essay, as well as an essay on telecommunication pioneer William G. McGowan.
An accounting major and business administration minor, Lawler has been named to the Dean's List five semesters with a 3.82 cumulative grade point average and is a member of Stonehill's Honors Program.
Lawler interned at Selfridges & Company in London. Specializing in high-end fashion, Selfridges is the second largest retail store in the United Kingdom. While there during the spring semester of his junior year, Lawler served as an assistant accountant.
His responsibilities included analyzing sales trends, monitoring cash sales margins, and calculating sales and profit margin projections. "It was extremely helpful using software and my mathematical knowledge in order to assist in these analyses, however, the most significant help came from the business knowledge that I have gained through the many management classes that I have taken in college," says Lawler.
"Without these background skills, my ability to make the appropriate decisions using the information presented to me would have been greatly impeded," he continues.
Lawler says he enjoyed his internship at Selfridges so much that he now plans to pursue a career as a consultant. "I want to continue using my concentration in accounting in order to analyze companies' performance and provide insight into methods in which the business could operate more efficiently."
In addition to his internship in London, Lawler has been an accounting intern and camp director at Camp Kingsmont in Amherst since the summer of 2008. From the summer of 2005 to 2007, he worked in the Amherst Regional Public School system as a computer technician as well.
At Stonehill, Lawler served as a teaching assistant during the spring semester of his sophomore year, aiding teachers and tutoring students in three quantitative analysis classes.
Lawler has also been active in volunteering at My Brother's Keeper, the MSPCA and the Amherst Soup Kitchen.
Many members of the Business Administration faculty recommended Lawler as the 2009-2010 McGowan Scholar, including his faculty sponsor Associate Professor of Business Administration J. Richard Anderson.
